Kottoor village was a famous administrative and trading center since ancient times. Kottur was also an administrative unit of Kogli-300 in the 11th-12th century. It is called as KotturSeeme, KotturChavadi in all inscriptions. Here, GaddeKalleshwar built during the KalyanaChalukya era, Three Stone Mutt of Trikuta(MuruKalluMatha) Temple and ancient inscriptions are important evidences.

Kottur is famous for its BasaveshwaraSharana, the place where Basaveshwara, one of the PanchaGanadhiswaras, the Yatis and Gurus, resided. As Basaveshwara made Kottur their constituency, they are known as KotturBasaveshwara, Kottureshwara. In addition to this two other important monuments are Tottilu Mutt, GachchinaMuttas, apart from these the Kottureshwar Temple is an important center of worship of KotturBasaveshwar. It consists of a Garbhagriha, a spacious hall with a canopy and porches. It is also known as Darbhar Matt. In the sanctum sanctorum there is an idol of Shrees and a Shivalinga on a high pedestal. Built in the post Vijayanagara period, the pillars of this temple are adorned with rampant lions and yalis. On the pillars there are reliefs like Shiva, Parvati, Dancer, Yati, Narasimha etc. Various deity sculptures have been created on the front hand wall.

Gachchin Matt is the burial place of Kottureswara Swami. It is also known as Yoga Samadhi place. This is also a spacious temple built on forty pillars in the Vijayanagara style. In the sanctum sanctorum there is a shrine containing the tomb of Sri, on which a metal mandapam is placed, in which the statue of Sri is enshrined.

Tottilu Matt is another temple built in the name of Kottureswara. It has a Garbhagriha, sabhamantapa, porticoes besides a spacious prakara and mahadwargopuram. In the sanctum sanctorum there is throne (gadduge)​​and a metal pavilion above the gadduge ​​has enshrined a Shivalinga.

KottureswarJatraRathotsava (fair) is a famous fair of this region. It is noteworthy that KottureswarMaharathotsava is celebrated with great pomp every year on the Jeshta day of Magha month.

By Air

Daily flights are available between Jindal Vijayanagar Airport ( 38 Kms from Hampi ) to Bengaluru and Hyderabad under UDAAN Scheme. Flights are also available to Hubballi Airport which is 150 Kms away from Hampi.

By Train

Hosapete is the nearest railway station which is 12 Kms away from Hampi. Daily trains are available from Hubli and Guntakal junctions to Hosapete.

By Road

Vijayanagara District is well connected by Bus through state highway and National Highway. Buses are available to all major cities of karnataka from ballari ( 65 Kms from Hampi ) and Hosapete (12 Kms from Hampi).
