ANKASAMUDRA BIRD SANCTUARY, HAGARIBOMMANAHALLI TALUK

 

Ankasamudra is one of the ancient villages of Hagari Bommanahalli taluk, 30 km from Hosapete. Far to the east of this village is a vast lake built during the Vijayanagara period. It is a famous bird sanctuary of this region. Before this call, rainwater was mostly resorted to. But now the work of filling water from Tungabhadra river has also started. The 244-acre lake is home to trees like karijali, plants and shrubs that provide a safe haven for birds. With the onset of winter, it is a favourite place where many different species of birds migrate here from different parts of the world to build their nests and breed. Apart from the fish in this lake, fish and insects in Tungabhadra backwater are their food.

This is the rarest bird sanctuary of KalyanaKarnataka region. A beautiful abode for a variety of birds, this place has been declared a bird conservation reserve by the government in 2017. More than 35,000 birds of about 240 different species have been recorded to migrate and breed here. There are nine species of fish in this lake. Among the migratory birds here is a flock of egrets. Besides these ducks, egrets, little egrets, whistling ducks, water crow (cormorant), hejjarle (spot-billed pelican), gray heron, Indian cormorant, gate cormoret, grayparan, purple herons, night heron, cattle egret, black and white ibis, bull bull, ibis. It is notable that more than 150 species of birds such as Spark, live here.
