Queen’s Bath Hampi

Direction
Category Historic

The extensive building on the right side of the road leading to the royal palace after crossing Kamalapura is the queen’s bath, a square building built in stone, brick andstucco(fine plaster used for coating wall surfaces or moulding into architectural decorations). Although it looks like a simple ordinary building on the outside, the interior has 24 domes with Indo-Sarcenic style arches of varied design and ornamentation. The special feature of this is that there is an arrangement to stop the water around the building. The water flowing from the KamalapurLake through canals was diverted to it from the east by a small stone channel. A square tank in the middle of this building has a walkable courtyard. This courtyard is surrounded by a vaulted and domed roof. These domes are decorated differently from each other. Its central well is 1.8 meters deep. Similarly, there is a mandapa (auditorium) in the swimming pool and it is strengthened by holes. The east, west, north walls have large open arches in the center and beautifully decorated galleries around. There are small arched windows in the outer walls of the courtyard. A small arched entrance flanks the south portico, notable for its tables with overhanging windows facing the swimming pool, with stone seating. Close to this entrance are the necessary steps to ascend to the upper floor. The vaulted and domed ceilings here are of a different pattern. Octagonal, circular domes are decorated with semi-circular, floral panels, rows of parrots, yali (The yali defines spaces, carved into pillars and marking entryways), chain structure, lotus, flower vine, bud, petal etc. These decorations enhance the beauty of the dome. Built using stucco(fine plaster used for coating wall surfaces or moulding into architectural decorations) this building was the most important bathing pond of the royal family. It is special that there is a system for passing clean water from the Kamalapura Lake, small pipes are also installed for the dirty water to go out.
